I love this thing! The Kuhn Rikon Single Cup Easy Brew is exactly that; an easy brewing system. I was skeptical when I first received it, but have been won over by its clever, simple, and efficient design.I am not concerned about the plastic. It is not cheap or flimsy. It is a light yet solid, high temperature resistant food grade plastic which does not impart any taste into the hot beverage; nor will it for the device's lifetime as long as it is handled and cleaned normally. This sort of plastic is used in food and beverage preparation in kitchens all over the world because temperatures which would begin to break down the plastic and release chemicals are significantly higher than the temperature of boiling water. It is far safer than glass because it won't shatter. It is easy to clean and no more likely to stain than any other common plastic component used to brew tea or coffee. The mechanism which controls the flow of the hot beverage is simple, but the way it works in conjunction with the permanent filter is more complex than many other devices in this category, including a french press, thus accounting for much of the expense of the unit. Used carefully and gently, respecting the mechanics, it will last many years and provide hundreds, perhaps thousands, of satisfying cups of your favorite hot beverage. My favorite aspect is, this one simple unit allows the beverage to both steep and drain through a filter into your mug. This gives you the advantages of both the french press (for steeping) and the single cup filter system, like a Melitta, in a single device. Once you have the system down there is no mess and the entire brewing process takes only a few minutes. The major advantage the Easy Brew has over nearly every other single cup system I've used is in its portability. You can travel with this device and whether you are staying in a hotel or a tent, as long as you have hot water, you can enjoy your favorite loose tea or coffee without running it through who knows what. You never have to worry about running out of filters at home or on the road.TWO PIECES OF ADVICE:1) For users: Don't place the Easy Brew on top of your mug until you are ready to drain it out. The Easy Brew filled with liquid sitting on top of the mug is very top heavy and the slightest bump could tumble the whole thing over. I've learned this from experience.2) For the manufacturer: It would be nice if future versions of the Easy Brew allowed for simple removal of the filter element for easier cleaning. The inability to do this has kept my review from being a full five stars. I'm hoping to get 1000 leak-proof uses out of this which at a unit cost of $20.00 would be about 2 cents for each 16 oz cup (not including actual coffee or tea), which considering the quality and ease of the brewing, would put it in my book as "totally worth it." Since we are already within sight of 100, I don't see any reason why this won't happen along with perhaps even another 1000. The seal between the filter and the cup seems to me to be the most likely area for this effort to be derailed, especially if I need to pry the filter up occasionally to rinse out fine grounds which sneak through and become trapped under the filter or around the edge of it.

I'm a coffee lover, and I can't imagine any day starting without a nice strong cup. However, at this price point, Kukon's Single Cup easy brew is a tough sell. These are the reasons why:1. Poor and flimsy design;2. the resulting coffee is most definitely not full strength, and there's a bitterness in the results; and3. instructions are far from clear. When I took this out of the box, I was disappointed immediately. Looks cheap and right away have issues with the filter. Why is it not easily removable for cleaning? Just wasn't what I expected, and the resulting coffee is in no way comparable with the taste of regular brewed coffee. I just made this as my first coffee of the day, and I'm left feeling dissatisfied. Hey, I need a full strength fix!

New Take on Cafe Filtre

The Kuhn Rikon Easy Brew is not going to win any beauty contests. It's a cheesy little plastic gizmo and an eyesore: the color is an off-red and it's light and flimsy when you pick it up. But it makes one really good cup of coffee. The principle is the same as those little tin hats you get in Vietnamese restaurants when you order coffee, except a little smarter. The Easy Brew has a built in filter so you don't have to worry about coffee grounds invading your cup, and a little button on top that you press to release your coffee after it has brewed for a few minutes...no waiting for it to pour into the cup, drop by drop, while you stare vacantly into space and try to figure out where exactly your life went wrong.Several reviewers seemed perplexed by the coffee grounds. How do you dispose of them? No need to call in NASA. I suspect The Perplexed grew up in the Mr. Coffee era with the little paper filters. For those of you too young to remember The Percolater, first of all, I hate you. Second, just let the grounds dry out. Then you whack the gizmo with the heel of your hand and they tumble into the trash. See, you with the unlined faces and perky derrieres, those of us who are only semi-young (shut up, just shut up) have wisdom. And we would not trade that for anything. Except Botox. Two other reviewers brought up "potential" problems. One complains that, while the Easy Brew does not leak, it looks like it could someday. Another frets over the possibility of the little button falling off. Relax, already. Focus on the positive...cell phone radiation will probably get us first.A couple of caveats: If you grind your own coffee beans, use the same grind as for a coffee press...the more powdery or fine grinds can slip through the mesh.Boiling water is really too hot for coffee and gives it an off, cooked taste. Let the water sit for about 30 seconds so the temperature goes down a bit. But because you have to wait while the coffee steeps, you risk having a lukewarm beverage, so be sure rinse both your cup and the Easy Brew with boiling water so they don't pull the heat out. And don't pay any attention to the one cup/two cup marking on the thing. If you use a decent sized mug, the two cup is going to fill it to the brim. Adjust accordingly if you like to add milk or cream.Twenty bucks seems like a lot of money to throw at a coffee maker, but this has another bonus: You can take it to work with you. Instead of buying your morning caffeine fix at Starbucks, use the office water machine's hot water option and make your own freshly brewed coffee. The Easy Brew will pay for itself in the first week. And even better, you can ignore the office coffee maker and the sludge that's been stewing since 8 am...in a pot that has probably never been washed. The Easy Brew can also be used for making tea, but I don't see the point. A teabag is easier if you are in a hurry, and this is not much different from dropping a couple of spoonsful into a pot and pouring in the boiling water. A teapot is more festive anyway.
