After buying a high end espresso machine (Crossland CC1) and burr grinder (Rancilo Rocky)I found that I had too many variables to control in my quest for the perfect espresso shot. I decided to spring for the Espro tamper so I could ensure an exact 30lb tamp each and every time, thus removing one of the many variables in making an espresso. I paired this purchase with a digital gram scale which would allow me to weigh my dose so I could verify I was using the same amount of coffee each time.I have been very pleased with the results I have been able to achieve and can contribute part of that success to the tamper. It has a very slight release once you hit 30lbs of pressure. If you want more than thirty pounds of force than you can certainly keep pressure down as there is nothing to stop you from pressing as hard as you would like.

I started with a standard tamp I got for around $28 and I was doing ok with it. Then I decided I wanted to get this calibrated tamp to "make sure" my shots were consistent.I guess my tamping skill was ok because the quality and timing of my pulls haven't really changed much between a standard and the calibrated one, but I must say that it really eliminates one variable in the pull process.However, now I'm thinking I should have gotten the convex version.
